Duo jailed for custody of counterfeit banknotes *************************************

Two men, aged 35 and 49, were sentenced to 16 months' of imprisonment respectively at the District Court today (July 30) after being convicted of offence involving the custody or control of counterfeit notes and coins.

The Court held that on January 4 this year, police officers found that the two men, both were two-way permit holders, were acting suspiciously and intercepted them at Tsim Sha Tsui area. Fourteen pieces of counterfeit $100 RMB banknotes were found in their possession.

Officers of the Commercial Crime Bureau took over the case for further investigations. The men were subsequently charged jointly for one count of conspiracy to custody or control of counterfeit notes and coins and sentences were handed down today.

Police reminded that a person who has in his custody or under his control any thing which is, and which he knows or believes to be, a counterfeit of a currency note or of a protected coin, intending either to pass or tender it as genuine or to deliver it to another with the intention that he or another shall pass or tender it as genuine, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for 14 years.
