Man sentenced for theft of motorcycles

A 36-year-old man was sentenced to five years' imprisonment and disqualified from driving for 10 years at the District Court today (July 31) for various offences including theft of five motorcycles.

The court heard that officers of Police's Organized Crime and Triad Bureau acted on information and intercepted the man driving a motorcycle at Lek Yuen Estate, Sha Tin in the evening on December 4, 2008.

It was revealed that the motorcycle had earlier been stolen in Tseung Kwan O area. Follow up investigations showed that the man had stolen a total of five motorcycles, valued at $180,000, across the territory from June to December in 2008. He also drove furiously on the road with the stolen motorcycles on two occasions in August 2008 and caused the injury of a pedestrian.

The man was later charged with 20 counts of offences, including theft, dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving without a licence and going equipped for stealing.

He pleaded guilty to all charges and the sentence is handed down today.

Police would continue the efforts to combat theft of vehicles. To prevent and detect such crimes, Police will maintain close liaison with the insurance industry, as well as the motors, logistics and transport trades in order to collect intelligence and provide with the industries anti-theft advices. Enhanced sentence would also be applied against offenders whenever appropriate.
