Road safety campaign to Promote Safe Cycling
********************************************

Police yesterday (August 2) concluded a territory-wide campaign to raise public awareness on safe cycling.

The Summer Safe Cycling Campaign was conducted from July 20 to yesterday and resulted in the issue of 538 verbal warnings and 350 summonses to cyclists. Also, eight warnings were issued to pedestrians who abused the use of cycling tracks during this period.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited around 700 locations frequented by cyclists, including cycling tracks and railway stations and distributed over 20,000 leaflets during the campaign.

The operation was the latest in an on-going series of campaigns conducted by Police in 2009 using a mix of publicity, education and enforcement actions to target cycling offences. It aimed at reminding cyclists of the importance of road safety and their legal responsibility. In addition, both cyclists and pedestrians were advised of the proper use of cycling tracks.

In the first six months in 2009, a total of 829 persons were injured and five died in 798 traffic accidents which involved cyclists.

A police spokesman reminded cyclists that they should comply with the road traffic legislations and any offenders will be subjected to fines and penalties similar to other road users.
