Police made record seizure of cocaine
**************************************

Police yesterday (August 17) arrested three men in Sha Tin and seized 34 kg of suspected cocaine, the largest seizure so far this year, with an estimated market value of $28 million.

Acting on intelligence, officers of the Narcotics Bureau (NB) laid an ambush at a shopping mall in Sha Tin yesterday afternoon.

At about 1.45pm, the officers spotted two men placed some parcels into two rental storage lockers in the shopping mall and left. The officers then found a third man approached the lockers afterwards and intended to pick up the parcels. The operation immediately turned overt and the officers intercepted all three men, aged between 30 and 32, in the vicinity.

A total of two kilograms of suspected cocaine were seized from the lockers.

Following a house search in Ma On Shan, the officers turned up another 29 kilograms of suspected cocaine powder, 2.8 kilograms of suspected crack cocaine and some packaging equipments.

The flat is believed to be a drug packaging and storage centre. The total seizure of the drugs could fetch about $28 million if sold in the local retail market.

The three men will later be charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs and appear in Sha Tin Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (August 19).

The operation was part of the on-going anti-drug operation codenamed " Vanquisher" conducted by Police since mid-June.

A police spokesman stressed that the Force are taking rigorous effort to tackle drug abuse, particularly among youths. Police will continue to crack down the sources of drug trafficking.
