Policeman fires shots in Tai Po
*************************

Police are investigating an open fire case in which an off-duty Police Station Sergeant fired three shots from his service pistol in Tai Po this morning (August 24).

The off-duty officer, 54, was walking past an open-space car park on Tat Wan Road, Tai Po about 2am when he saw a man acting suspiciously near a goods vehicle. The sergeant approached the man and identified himself as a police officer but the man, armed with a knife, tried to assault him. The officer fired two shots at the man after his verbal warnings were ignored.

Another man then came from the rear of another goods vehicle and pointed a pistol-like object at the sergeant who then sought cover behind a nearby vehicle and fired a shot at him.

The two men fled towards a nearby hillside. Two fruit knives, a screwdriver, a cap, a pair of gloves and a bag containing an iron bar and a linen bag were located at the scene.

The Station Sergeant injured his left leg and was sent to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital.

Investigations by District Crime Squad of Tai Po District are under way. Police urged anyone who saw the incident or who may have any information to contact the police at 3661 3545 or 3661 3600.
