The Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) maintains a List of Part-time Interpreters (English/Cantonese) who may be engaged on a freelance basis to provide interpretation service as and when necessary.
HK$347 per hour with a minimum two-hour fee of HK$694 for each assignment, and after the first two hours, an hourly rate of HK$347 is paid. No basic salary and fringe benefits.
[Remark: Rates payable to the Part-time Interpreters (English/Cantonese) are determined by HKPF and are subject to review.]
All applicants must –
be a permanent resident of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region;
be in possession of
a Bachelor’s Degree in Translation/Interpretation, Chinese/English or a relevant subject from a university in Hong Kong, or equivalent; OR
an accredited Associate Degree/Higher Diploma/Diploma in Translation /Interpretation, Chinese/English or a relevant subject from a recognized post-secondary institution in Hong Kong, or equivalent;
have Level 3 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalentNote; and
have three years’ experience in jobs involving either translation and interpretation work or the frequent use of written and spoken English.
Note: | Grade C in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to Level 3 in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth. Grade C in Chinese Language and English Language in International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) / General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) / General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) (GCE O Level) / General Certificate of Education (Advanced Subsidiary Level) (GCE AS Level) are accepted as comparable to Level 3 in Chinese Language and English Language in HKDSEE / HKCEE. ‘Attained with Distinction’ results in the Applied Learning Chinese (for non-Chinese speaking students) subject, Grade C in Chinese Language in General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) (GCE A Level), Grade E in Chinese Language and Culture / Chinese Language and Literature in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) and Chinese Language in the Hong Kong Higher Level Examination (HKHLE) are accepted as comparable to Level 3 in Chinese Language in HKDSEE / HKCEE. Grade B in English Language in HKHLE, Grade E in Use of English in HKALE and English Language in GCE A Level are accepted as comparable to Level 3 in English Language in HKDSEE / HKCEE. |
To provide interpretation service (oral and written) in English/Cantonese.
[Remark: A Part-time Interpreter (English/Cantonese) is usually required to work outside office hours, including Saturdays, Sundays and General Holidays.]
The HKPF maintains a List of Registered Part-time Interpreters (English/Cantonese) (hereinafter called ‘the List’) who may be engaged to provide interpretation service as and when necessary. These part-time interpreters are not employees of the HKPF. They, therefore, are not entitled to any employment-related fringe benefits. They will provide the necessary service to the HKPF on a freelance basis in the capacity of service providers as and when such needs arise.
Applicants who have passed the selection interview cum interpretation test and background check will be registered and included in the List. Inclusion in the List serves only as a record of the intention and interest of the applicants in offering the interpretation service in English/Cantonese to the HKPF. It does not mean that the interpreters are employed by the HKPF nor will it guarantee them to be engaged by the HKPF for provision of interpretation service in English/Cantonese in future. Jobs will be assigned to the interpreters on the List subject to the operational needs of the HKPF. The payment of remuneration will be computed on an hourly basis.

For qualifications awarded by local institutions / Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, copies of the relevant transcripts / diplomas / certificates / other qualification documents are not required to be submitted at this stage of application.
As for qualifications obtained from institutions outside Hong Kong, copies of the relevant transcripts / diplomas / certificates / other qualification documents should be submitted by email to sptr-ra-ptr@police.gov.hk (with ‘Application for Inclusion in HKPF’s List of Part-time Interpreters (English/Cantonese)’ stated in the email subject) or by post to the Police Translator Section, 1/F, former Ngau Tau Kok Divisional Police Station, 1 Siu Yip Street, Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong (with the copies of the required supporting documents in A4 paper size and ‘Application for Inclusion in HKPF’s List of Part-time Interpreters (English/ Cantonese)’ stated on the envelope; the postmark date on the envelope will be regarded as the date of submission of the documents), on or before 7 November 2025. If applicants fail to provide the relevant supporting documents by the above specified date, or if the relevant supporting documents are incomplete or not received by the Police Translator Section by the above specified date, such applications will not be considered.
Do not send any originals of diplomas / certificates or other qualification documents at this stage of application.
Eligible applicants will be invited to attend a selection interview cum interpretation test, and they will normally receive an invitation by post in about eight weeks from the closing date for application. Those who are not invited for an interview may assume that their applications are unsuccessful.
