Entry Requirements

If you wish to join the Hong Kong Police Force as Inspector or Constable, you are expected to meet the requirements listed below.

You must be a permanent resident of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

* Interested applicants may consider submitting applications to Police posts 3-5 months before securing the relevant academic and language proficiency requirements, so as to speed up the selection process.


Inspector

Academic Requirements

Candidates should have -

  • a Bachelor degree from a Hong Kong university, or equivalent; or

  • an accredited Associate Degree from a Hong Kong tertiary institution, or a Higher Diploma from a Hong Kong polytechnic / polytechnic university / Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education / technical college, or a Diploma from a registered post-secondary college awarded after the date of its registration, or equivalent; or

  • Level 3 or equivalent (Note 1) or above in five subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) (Note 2), or equivalent; or

  • Grade E or above in two subjects at Advanced Level in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination and Level 3 (Note 3) / Grade C or above in three other subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) (Note 2), or equivalent; and

Language Proficiency Requirements

Candidates should have -

  • met the language proficiency requirements of Level 1 results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the Common Recruitment Examination, or equivalent; or

  • Level 2 (Note 3) or above in Chinese Language and English Language in HKDSEE or HKCEE, or equivalent; or

  • Applicants not meeting the above requirement may still apply. They will be exempted from this requirement if they have a pass in the English Language Proficiency Test and Chinese Language Proficiency Test for Police Inspector recruitment exercise; and

  • be able to read and write Chinese and speak fluent Cantonese.

Basic Law and National Security Law Requirement

Candidates should have -

  • a pass result in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test (Notes 4 & 5).

Police Constable

Academic Requirements

Candidates should have –

(a) (i) Level 2 or equivalent (Note 1) or above in five subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) (Note 2), or equivalent; or
  (ii) Level 2 (Note 3) / Grade E or above in five subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) (Note 2), or equivalent; and

Language Proficiency Requirements

Candidates should have –

(b) met the language proficiency requirements of
(i) Level 2 (Note 3) or above in English Language in HKDSEE or HKCEE, or equivalent;
  (ii) Level 2 (Note 3) or above in Chinese Language in HKDSEE or HKCEE, or equivalent. Applicant without the minimum required Chinese language proficiency standard may also apply for the post. They will be referred to sit for and must pass the Government Standard Examination; and
  (iii)

be able to read and write Chinese and speak fluent Cantonese

Basic Law and National Security Law Requirement

Candidates should have –

(c) a pass result in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test (Notes 4 & 5).

Note

  1. For civil service appointment purpose, “Attained with Distinction” and "Attained with Distinction (I)" in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of two Applied Learning subjects), and Grade C in Other Language subjects in the HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to Level 3 in the New Senior Secondary subjects in the HKDSEE. “Attained” in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of two Applied Learning subjects), and Grade E in Other Language subjects in the HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to Level 2 in the New Senior Secondary subjects in the HKDSEE.

  2. The subjects may include Chinese Language and English Language.

  3. For civil service appointment purpose, ‘Grade C’ and ‘Grade E’ in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to ‘Level 3’ and ‘Level 2’ respectively in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth.

  4. All applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their knowledge of the Basic Law and the National Security Law. A pass result in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test is an entry requirement for all civil service jobs. Only those candidates who have passed the Basic Law and National Security Law Test will be considered for appointment. Answering at least 10 out of 20 questions correctly will be deemed to have a pass result in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test.

  5. For candidates who have not taken the relevant Basic Law and National Security Law Test or have not attained a pass result in the relevant Basic Law and National Security Law Test at the time of application, they may still apply for the job and arrangements will be made for them to take the relevant Basic Law and National Security Law Test during the recruitment process.

Physique

  • You must have a good physique as you will be required to pass a physical fitness test during the selection process. If you are a male candidate, you should be at least 163cm tall and weigh 50kg. For female candidates, you must be at least 152cm tall and weigh 42kg. You must have good eyesight and you are required to pass an initial eyesight test without the aid of any eyesight correction tools.
