The Police today (January 3) urged members of the public to be cautious when disclosing personal particulars to strangers.

The appeal was made after three theft cases were reported to the Police since mid-December 2003. In the three cases, personal particulars of the victims were suspected to have been leaked to and used by culprits for illegal purposes.

Enquiries revealed that three victims including a 39-year-old man and two women aged 24 and 27 discovered fraudulent withdrawals of cash from their credit card accounts by means of credit cards at automatic-teller-machines in December 2003.

There were 34 fraudulents transactions in total amounting to more than $88,800 in the three reported cases.

All the three victims recalled having shown their identity cards to unknown men who claimed to be staff members of delivery companies when they each received an unexpected parcel from anonymous source some time before December 2003.

Members of the public are urged to watch out for strangers who ask for their personal information or identity cards.

Police officers of the Divisional Investigation Team of Hung Hom are investigating the three cases with assistance from the banking institutions concerned.
