Police officers issued a total of 446 Fixed Penalty Tickets (FPTs) and 35
summonses to road users violating traffic regulations during a two-day
operation of the Regional Traffic Day on Hong Kong Island.

The operation concluded at 7 pm today (January 22) and a total of 188 officers
from Traffic Hong Kong Island and District Traffic Teams of Eastern, Wan Chai,
Central and Western were deployed to enforce traffic regulations at traffic
black sites on Hong Kong Island.

A total of 290 FPTs were issued for illegal parking and 156 for other traffic
offences.

Sixty-four pedestrians and 225 drivers were cautioned for committing minor
traffic offences.

Meanwhile, pamphlets and leaflets on road safety were also distributed to road
users.

Statistics revealed that a total of 3237 traffic accidents involving
casualties occurred on Hong Kong Island in 2007.

Of them, 54 per cent were attributed to the negligence of pedestrians.
