2004-01-20 21:57 Police will adopt a zero tolerance approach towards possession or discharge of fireworks and firecrackers will spare no effort in stemming out illegal fireworks activities during the Lunar New Year. Since last November, Police have conducted a series of vigorous enforcement actions in various locations in Tin Shui Wai, Yuen Long and Pat Heung, resulting in the seizure of fireworks and firecrackers weighing 1.27 metric tons in total. A total of three men were arrested for illegal possession of fireworks or firecrackers in two separate operations conducted by Police in Deep Bay off Nim Wan and Tai Kiu Road, Yuen Long, on January 5 and January 19 respectively. In view of the potential danger to life and property posed by discharge or storage of fireworks and firecrackers, a Police spokesman reiterated that stringent enforcement actions will continue to be taken during the Lunar New Year. Under the Dangerous Goods (General) Ordinance, anyone who is found unlawfully possessing or discharging fireworks or firecrackers will face a maximun penalty of a fine of $25,000 and six months' imprisonment upon conviction. |
