2005-11-12 12:38 Police arrested a 32-year-old man for trafficking in dangerous drugs following a seizure of $9.5 million worth of suspected cannabis in Tokwawan yesterday (November 11). Acting on intelligence and following extensive investigation since early October this year, officers of the Narcotics Bureau (NB) laid an ambush at a building at 136 Tam Kung Road in Tokwawan at about 4.45 pm yesterday and intercepted the 32-year-old man when he left his premises with one kilogram of suspected herbal cannabis seized from him. Subsequent search in his residence led to the seizure of about 211 kilograms of cannabis which were vaccum-packed in plastic bags and kept in 12 plastic boxes. The man was subsequently arrested for trafficking in dangerous drugs. A set of vacuum-packing machine and an electronic balance were also seized at scene. Investigation revealed that the cannabis seized was imported via land routes from the Mainland and smuggled into Hong Kong. It is believed that the cannabis is intended for local consumption during the coming Christmas and New Year Eve festivals. It can be sold at some $9.5 million in the retail market and is a record seizure since 2002. The arrested man was charged with two counts of trafficking in dangerous drugs and will appear in Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts to face his charges on Monday (November 14). |
