Hong Kong is a place of law and order and Police will not tolerate any violence that challenges the authority of Police officers in executing their duties, a Police spokesman said today (October 31).

The spokesman was speaking in response to a recent court case in which a 45-year-old man was sentenced to 18 days of imprisonment and a fine of $500 for assaulting a Police Officer and criminal damage charges at the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts on October 22.

The defendant, a 45-year-old Australian man, was involved in a traffic accident involving his private car and a public light bus on Po Tung Road, Sai Kung on July 30, 2003. During the incident, he became agitated and kicked the public light bus at scene.

When a uniformed Police Officer took him to a Police Station nearby, the man acted in a disorderly manner and spat onto the face of the Officer.

A Police spokesman said, "Although this was not a case where punch was involved, spitting is a serious act and an insult to the Officer’s authority."

"Anyone who assaults a Police Officer in the course of his duty cannot expect any allowance. The Force will continue to carry out their duties to maintain law and order."

The above details are as provided from scene at the time of posting (indicated in red), and may change as the incident/police inquiry progresses.
