2003-10-31 13:07 Hong Kong is a place of law and order and Police will not tolerate any violence that challenges the authority of Police officers in executing their duties, a Police spokesman said today (October 31). The spokesman was speaking in response to a recent court case in which a 45-year-old man was sentenced to 18 days of imprisonment and a fine of $500 for assaulting a Police Officer and criminal damage charges at the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts on October 22. The defendant, a 45-year-old Australian man, was involved in a traffic accident involving his private car and a public light bus on Po Tung Road, Sai Kung on July 30, 2003. During the incident, he became agitated and kicked the public light bus at scene. When a uniformed Police Officer took him to a Police Station nearby, the man acted in a disorderly manner and spat onto the face of the Officer. A Police spokesman said, "Although this was not a case where punch was involved, spitting is a serious act and an insult to the Officer’s authority." "Anyone who assaults a Police Officer in the course of his duty cannot expect any allowance. The Force will continue to carry out their duties to maintain law and order." |
