2004-01-09 16:10 Police would continue to take stringent enforcement action against illegal possession or discharge of fireworks in the run-up to the Lunar New Year. The remarks were made by the Senior Superintendent (Operations) of New Territories North Region, Mr Leung King-hang, at a press briefing today (January 9) on the seizure of 240 kilograms of fireworks and firecrackers in Pat Heung yesterday (January 8). Mr Leung said that illegal discharge of fireworks in some rural areas was found in the past especially during the Lunar New Year, but the situation had been improved after clear and strong messages were given to the local communities to seek their support and co-operation by various means. A total of 7 199 kilograms of fireworks were seized and 16 persons were arrested in the Region last year. "Police will spare no effort in cracking down on all fireworks-related offences," he added. In light of the approach of the Lunar New Year, Police have stepped up patrols in the rural areas, resulting in the seizure of 239 kilograms of various types of fireworks and firecrackers in an abandoned container in Shek Wu Tong at about 4 pm yesterday by the Rural Patrol Unit of Pat Heung Division (RPU/PH). The officers of the RPU/PH further seized seven kilograms of "coconut" fireworks in another abandoned container in Shek Wu Tong at about 10 am today. The haul could fetch about $39,000 if sold. Under the Dangerous Goods (General) Ordinance, anyone who was found unlawfully possessing or discharging fireworks or firecrackers will face a maximum penalty of a fine of $25,000 and six months' imprisonment upon conviction. |
