2004-08-04 15:27 Police are investigating a case in which a 47-year-old man died after an explosion when he was driving his private car on Long Tin Road in Yuen Long this morning (August 4). Shortly after 8.20 am, Police received reports that a traffic accident occurred on Long Tin Road opposite Long Ping Estate and that explosion sound was heard. Police officers immediately arrived at the scene and located two private cars with the one at the back seriously burnt. The 47-year-old male driver and the 42-year-old female passenger were rescued and rushed to Tuen Mun Hospital where the man was certified dead at 9.10 pm. No casualty was reported in the private car in the front. Initial enquiries revealed that during the time of the incident, the private car of the deceased was travelling along Long Tin Road towards Tin Shui Wai. When it reached the roundabout opposite Long Ping Estate, an explosion occurred. The car continued to move forward until it rammed another private car. Police Bomb Disposal Officers were deployed to the scene for examination and it was believed that the explosion was caused by an explosive device. The explosion occurred at about 8.20 am when the private car reached the roundabout of Long Tin Road opposite Long Ping Estate. The driver and a 42-year-old female passenger also on board the car were rushed to Tuen Mun Hospital for medical treatment. The man was later certified dead at 9.10 am. "Police attach great importance to the case and are actively investigating the incident," a Police spokesman said. Initial investigation revealed that the explosion was triggered off by an improvised explosive device. The spokesman said that Police were still looking into the connection between the present case and another case in which the deceased was injured during an explosion inside his private car at the junction of Ma Miu Road and On Ning Road in Yuen Long on November 29, 2000. He added that Police would make an all-out effort to follow all possible clues leading to detection.
