Supporting the Strategic Direction on "Enhancing Personal and Professional Qualities of Force Members", the Research Centre of the Specialised Services Training Centre in Police College and the Hong Kong Baptist University hosted a workshop on "Evidence-based Police Research and Critical Analysis" recently.

Tailor-made for Inspectorate officers engaged in staffing or research related duties, the five-day workshop aimed at enhancing their capability by introducing research concepts and methodologies, which would equip them with critical analytic skills.

At the opening of the workshop, Superintendent Mark Mak of the Research Centre told the participants that evidence-based policing would help officers improve their jobs such as crime control, community relations and resources management, and would generate knowledge and analysis within their formations for strengthening action plans to focus on local management and operational priorities.

A total of 27 Inspectorate officers from Regions and Bureaux attended the workshop.  To hone their practical skills, the officers designed their own research proposals on police topics ranging from management to operational issues and discussed them in the workshop.

Speaking of the workshop, one of the participants, Chief Inspector Chow Kwok-kee from Service Quality Wing said: "The workshop enhanced my knowledge of both the intellectual framework and practical skills to conduct police research and analysis of policing issues. It was also rewarding to share views with fellow officers in this regard."

The Research Centre will collate and analyse feedback on the workshop from the participants for post-course review.
