of '97 for JPC kids


Since its inception in 1974, the Junior Police Corps scheme has grown into Hong Kong's largest youth organisation. Running from 11 to 15 August, this year's camp attracted nearly 2,000 JPC kids

DURING a visit to the annual Junior Police Corps Summer Camp at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village in Ma On Shan the Chief Secretary for Administration, Anson Chan told JPC members there was a seven per cent decrease in the number of young offenders arrested in the first six months of 1997 compared with the same period last years.

¡@"However, we should not be complacent," she stressed. "To tackle juvenile crime effectively, co-operation from all community sectors is required."

¡@The JPC Summer Camp, organised yearly by the Hong Kong Police with sponsorship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, is aimed at providing wholesome activities for JPC members during the summer break.

¡@Accompanied by the Commissioner of Police Eddie Hui Ki-on and CSP Harry Blud, Mrs Chan tour the campsite and met with the young JPC campers.

¡@Running from 11 to 15 August this year's camp attracted nearly 2,000 JPC kids. It has adopted as its theme: "In life there is no take 2" from the Flight Crime Campaign. Addressing the students, Chief Secretary for Administration Chan called on them to spread the fight crime message to other young people. Since its inception in 1974, the Junior Police Corps scheme has grown into Hong Kong's largest youth organisation with more than 200,000 youngsters on its membership roll.

¡@Mrs Chan highly commended the contributions of the JPC members in community services and in helping the police to fight crime.
