HKI traffic day

On the buses: Pop singer Grace Yip with Central District JPC members

Almost 400 Fixed Penalty Tickets (FPT) and some 46 summonses were meted out to road users during the two-day Hong Kong Island Regional Traffic Day operation, November 20 and 21.

Some 144 officers from HKI Traffic and Eastern, Wan Chai, Central and Western District Traffic Teams were deployed to blackspots across the island.

Some 356 FPTs were issued for illegal parking and 37 for other traffic offences. And 267 pedestrians and 130 drivers were cautioned for committing minor traffic offences. Road safety leaflets were also distributed.

Some 2,514 traffic accidents involving casualties occurred on Hong Kong Island in the first 10 months of this year.

Of them, 17.7 per cent and 79 per cent were attributed to the negligence of pedestrians and drivers respectively.

  • Central District joined Central and Western District Road Safety Campaign Committee members in a November 18 bus parade to arouse road safety awareness.

The parade, from Queensway to Western, warned of the dangers of speeding and tailgating, the main themes of the 2000/2001 Road Safety Campaign.

Central District Commander Mike Francis, Committee Chairman Lo Ka-leung, and Road Safety Ambassador and popstar Grace Yip Pui-man, officiated at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

They later joined the parade to distribute leaflets and souvenirs carrying road safety messages during the trip from Queensway's United Centre to Belcher's Street in Kennedy Town.
