Chinese New Year is one of the most important festival in Chinese traditional culture and we have a lot of customs. For example, two days before Chinese New Year, people clean their house thoroughly to drive out the dirt and bad luck from the house. On the Chinese New Year’s Eve, people have a fancy dinner with all family members. After the meal, elders give the children red pockets to put under their pillows for exorcism. Then, people stroll in flower markets to buy flowers with good meaning, such as peach blossom represents love and popularity, rich bamboo represents wealth, narcissus represents everything becoming fine. During Chinese New Year, people always wear new clothes and prepare gifts to visit friends and relatives. They will speak blessings with each other, like “Kung Hay Fat Choi”, then adults will give red pockets to the children for blessing. People also cook special dishes such as Fat Choi Ho She which represents good hopes in the coming year. Some of the Chinese traditional customs are funny. I wish you a happy Chinese New Year!
