'Project MegaSafeguard'
New Territories South (NTS) Region has launched a scheme known as "Project MegaSafeguard" to combat and prevent crimes by reinforcing exchanges of information among the community, security personnel and the police. Shatin District (STDIST) is the pioneer of the project and is working closely with 38 building management companies to set up an information exchange network covering 111 residential estates in the district.

January 18 was a big day for "Project MegaSafeguard" when STDIST and Shatin District Fight Crime Committee held the "Shatin Fight Crime and Winter Precaution Carnival cum Outstanding Police Awards Presentation Ceremony and Kick-off Ceremony of Project MegaSafeguard" at the Shatin Central Park Amphitheatre, with NTS Regional Commander, Ms Lau Chi-wai, officiating at the event.

The Kick-off Ceremony marked the roll out of a community partnership project to reduce crimes on residential premises by enhancing information exchanges and promoting co-operation among the community, security personnel and the police.

To engage the community, STDIST invited Shatin District Council Chairman, Mr Ho Hau-cheung, Shatin District Fight Crime Committee Chairman, Mr Lee Kam-ming, and the representatives from 12 building management companies to act as "Crime Prevention Pioneers" in exchanging information and anti-crime messages with the police. STDIST also appointed "Senior Police Call - Shatin Silverhawk" and Junior Police Call members as "Neighbourhood Watchers" to assist in disseminating crime prevention messages. For reinforcing community policing, STDIST also set up an electronic platform, "The i-Safeguard", for sharing information on crime trends and crime prevention within the community.

At the ceremony, Ms Lau and STDIST Commander So Kam-tong presented Certificates of Invitation and Certificates of Appointment to the "Crime Prevention Pioneers" and "Neighbourhood Watchers" respectively.

'Project MetroNet'

Meanwhile, for effectively engaging the community, the Regional Crime Prevention Office of NTSouth Region (RCPO NTS) has actively developed the existing e-mail networks with the various stakeholders in the Region.

The networks have been integrated to form an "e-SecuNet", with a view to connecting with the stakeholders through electronic means. In this regard, RCPO NTS launched a partnership scheme, "Project MetroNet", with the Property Management of the MTR Corporation (MTRC) on January 9.
Under this scheme, all the properties on MTR stations in NTS Region will co-operate with the police in organising crime prevention activities. The MTRC Property Management will also assist the police in distributing crime prevention information to over 30,000 households and shops in the properties under their management.

"Project MetroNet" is the first partnership scheme between the MTRC Property Management and the police, run by NTS.

The "Wise Drive Network", which was launched by Traffic NTS earlier, is one of the information networks under "e-SecuNet". The "Wise Drive Network" connects 14 enterprises with large transport fleets. "e-SecuNet" is a huge police-public network and by December last year it has linked up with 252 schools, 25 property management companies for 300,000 shops and households, 249 commercial and industrial buildings, 8,000 professional drivers and a number of villages in NTS Region.
