警聲

Dear Sir,

I am a resident of Mount Davis Road, Pokfulam, Hong Kong. I wish to give my special compliments to officer Ng, his teammates and his supervisor Mr Ho of the Hong Kong Western Division.

I came back home on 3 January 2014 around 10:30pm. On the rooftop of my building, I saw officer Ng hiding behind a wall. I was initially shocked to see him and asked him to identify himself. He explained to me very politely that he was a police officer and was carrying out an operation as there had been a number of burglaries in the area recently. He offered to show his identification documents to me but I was unwilling to approach him at that stage. To further put me at ease (and that he was not lying to me), he told me to look up the news to check reports of burglaries on / around 27 December 2013. Later, I looked up the Internet and discovered that the police had successfully arrested some suspects around the Bisney Road area after dispatching many officers (even the dog team).

I saw officer Ng again tonight when I came home. He was again very polite and explained that he was keeping an eye on two staircases whilst his teammates were observing other strategic areas. He even asked me to help identify whether a man who was lurking in the dark with a dog was a local of Mount Davis Road. It was so dark that it took me some time to even spot that man. Credits to officer Ng and his eyesight. Officer Ng's hand was cold when I shook it - another testament to the fact that this was by no means an easy or comfortable job.

Later the same evening, Officer Ng called me on the telephone to tell me that he and his teammates would be re-stationed on the rooftop of Four Winds. He was very thoughtful and reminded me to be cautious if I happen to see anyone standing on my rooftop the following nights. He also told me and my family to take extra precaution and remember to lock the windows and doors.

I did not have a chance to tell officer Ng that I was a victim of a robbery many years ago when I was in primary school. The thief threatened me with a sharp screwdriver on the very same rooftop of my building where I met officer Ng. That was the reason why I was particularly shocked and felt threatened when I saw officer Ng there. The thief then took me into the house and stole many things. I was tied up together with my younger brother and our helper. The robber was never caught.

I am really grateful for the work that officer Ng and his team are doing. They are the true unsung heroes - protecting ordinary people most of whom do not even realise that there are many officers standing in the dark and cold and keeping them safe. And my thanks to officer Ho who supervised the whole operation. I (and many other residents of Pokfulam) feel much safer now knowing that a dedicated team of police officers is around.

I wish Officer Ng and everyone in his team a successful operation. And a happy 2014.

From a very grateful resident of Pokfulam,

Chang

(Editor's note: The officers praised in the letter are Western Divisional Commander Ho Kin-man and PC Ng Wing-wai from Western Division Task Force Sub-unit)
