The inauguration ceremony of the 11th Police Mentorship Programme (PMP) was held at Police Headquarters on April 29. Officiating at the ceremony were Acting Director of Personnel and Training Ng Tsui Fung-ying, Head Mentor, Assistant Commissioner Paul Lau, Deputy Head Mentor, Chief Superintendent Cheung Ching, and guests from the ten local universities and tertiary institutes participating in the PMP.

A total of 269 undergraduates have been selected as mentees of PMP 2014/15. They are non-final year students studying full-time degree courses in City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Lingnan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Open University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong.

The PMP has brought mentors, who are police officers, back to their alma maters for sharing police knowledge and personal experience with the mentees. The PMP also gives the mentees a better idea of the professionalism and challenges of police work.

To meet the development of the PMP, the mentor cadre has been expanded to a total of 102 mentors this year. They are experienced police officers while the assistant mentors are junior inspectors, among whom some were former PMP mentees.  Such combination would benefit the communication between mentors and mentees. Benefiting from the personal experiences of, and sharing by, their mentors, the mentees would understand police work better, with the result that they would be inspired to pursue a police career and serve the community after graduation.

Under the PMP, the mentees will also have the opportunities to visit different frontline police units, take part in summer job attachment programmes, summer day camp, and various activities organised by Recruitment Division or mentors.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mrs Ng attributed the success of the PMP to the continued support from the participating institutes and mentors.  She also called on the mentees to seize every opportunity to get well prepared and lay a good foundation for meeting the challenges of joining the Force after graduation.

Since implementation of the PMP, a total of 207 mentees have successfully joined the Force.  Recruitment Division has been adopting a proactive recruitment strategy to attract candidates with a high calibre and the required competencies to join the Force.
Nearly 270 undergraduates have joined the 11th PMP as mentees
