To mark the World Suicide Prevention Day and to promote officers' understanding and acceptance of depression, the Psychological Services Group invited former Director of Management Services (DMS) Mr Tang How-kong to share how he coped with depression at a "Balances and Wisdom" seminar in the Police Headquarters on September 9.

Mr Tang spoke on his experience of overcoming depression. He admitted that initially he found it difficult to adjust to retirement life because of his perfectionism and pursuit of excellence. Nonetheless, with the support of his wife, Mr Tang took the initiative to seek professional assistance. He also read some books, which enabled him to gain an insight into the significance of lowering his expectations of himself and taking things easy. Mr Tang said he is now happier than ever.

The seminar was attended by Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Tang Ping-keung, Director of the Police College Lau Chi-wai, New Territories South Regional Commander Lui Hon-kwok, Financial Controller Tau Chung-hong, as well as about 260 officers and civilian staff.
