Deputy Commissioner (Management) Chiu Wai-yin officiated at the opening ceremony for cohort 2018 of the "Master of Studies in Applied Criminology and Police Management" on May 28. This is a two-year part-time post-graduate programme, jointly run by the Hong Kong Police College and the University of Cambridge, with the objective of nurturing law enforcement leaders.

The programme focused on the study of crime and related issues, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based policy and practice. Twenty-two officers from the Force, the Correctional Services Department, the Customs and Excise Department and the Independent Commission Against Corruption have enrolled in the course this year following the admission of 27 students in 2017.

The teaching blocks are conducted in Hong Kong and the University of Cambridge in Britain. The first teaching block of cohort 2018 was held at the Hong Kong Police College from May 28 to June 1. In addition to lectures, group discussions and research projects, the programme has invited renowned scholars and community leaders to share their experience. Dr Victor Fung, former Chairman of Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council and Group Chairman of the Fung Group and Honorary Chairman of Li & Fung Limited, gave a speech on "The Greater Bay Area: Challenges and Opportunities" on May 31. He shared his insights into the strategies to connect Hong Kong, Macao and nine cities in Guangdong Province, and to further develop the Greater Bay Area into a hub for business and innovation. He enlightened the students on how business leaders and professionals could unleash their potential and enhance their competitiveness.

In July, the students of cohort 2017 and cohort 2018 will attend their next teaching blocks at the University of Cambridge.
