Several officers of the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) were invited as expert judges for the fourth China Cyber Forensics Competition held by the Criminal Investigation Police University of China from November 16 to 18 in Xiamen. Seventy-six teams participated in the competition, 40 of which were forensics student teams from police colleges across the country, and 36 were cyber forensics professionals.

As the CSTCB successfully held the Cyber Security Competition in Hong Kong in 2016 and 2017, its officers were invited to prepare questions for contestants of the competition and serve as expert judges. CSTCB officers set questions about a simulated hacking attack on the computer system of an e-commerce company. The questions surrounded a scenario in which the servers, database and Internet of Things devices of the company have been hacked, leading to leakage of clients' personal data. The leaked information was used in cyber crimes such as email scams and spreading of computer viruses.

The contestants had to trace the identity of the hackers, analyse how the computer system became infected with the virus and answer 170 questions on digital forensics within a specific time. The teams were required to explain the digital forensics process and then CSTCB officers assessed their performance.

All parties highly commended the CSTCB officers for their efforts. The competition strengthened the partnership between the Hong Kong Police Force and police colleges across the country. It also projected a professional image of the Force.
