Yu Tat-chung shares experience before retirement

Retiring Regional Commander of Hong Kong Island Yu Tat-chung gave a sharing session under the Senior Leaders' Exit Debriefing Series on January 23. He shared with over 100 officers his invaluable experience in operations, criminal investigation and human resources management over his 37 years of service.

Mr Yu stressed that an outstanding leader must work diligently and learn from experience to avoid repeating mistakes. He added that a pragmatic frontline commander should take responsibility for his faults. When dealing with large-scale public events, a commander should assess the situation, maintain communication with senior management and consider redeployment if necessary.

In addition, Mr Yu shared the skills in criminal investigation with reference to numerous high-profile cases he handled. He advised officers to act with empathy, in other words, put themselves in the shoes of the victims and their family members. When facing difficulties in investigation, officers should never give up, but rather make careful conjectures and explore the proof fearlessly. Mr Yu also reminded officers to strike a balance among work, personal and family life.

Mr Yu witnessed the development of the Force throughout his 37-year long police career. He said the Force has been devoting a significant amount of resources to nurture talents, adding that this has laid the cornerstone of the Force. He encouraged young commanding officers to maintain integrity and honesty, take accountability and uphold the core values of the Force at all times. The sharing session was inspiring and all participants enjoyed a fruitful afternoon.
