In view of an upsurge in romance scams and telephone deception cases in which fraudsters would either ask victims to create online banking accounts or even send associates to accompany the victims as they do so at the bank, the Regional Crime Prevention Office of Kowloon East (RCPO KE) has stepped up engagement efforts with the banking industry in the hope of curbing such deception attempts.

Apart from conducting seminars for banks, RCPO KE officers have designed deception indicator cards to help frontline bank staff identify potential victims. Moreover, banks have assisted the Police in putting anti-scam leaflets at their counters to educate the public about the modus operandi of deception cases.

With the collaboration of various banks in KE, three deception cases have been intercepted by bank staff recently. In recognition of the bank staff’s efforts in combating deception, Deputy Regional Commander of KE Chan Man-tak presented appreciation letters to the bank staff concerned on August 31. KE will continue to engage stakeholders in combating deception to protect the public.
