The Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) has initiated “Project CAPTURE” with a view to bolstering digital investigation capability of crime officers. The project involves the installation of a visualisation support system in the Video Interview Rooms (VIRs) of police stations.

Police officers can use the system during video recorded interviews (VRIs) to capture contents inside mobile phone devices for direct and swift enquiry with interviewees. The system helps police officers, during the VRIs, to examine the digital contents stored in a mobile phone effortlessly and preserve them as evidence for future court proceedings. Without the need to seek assistance from CSTCB for forensic examination of devices, the investigation teams can directly handle the cases involving straightforward digital evidence.

In September 2020, CSTCB launched a six-month pilot scheme for the project in Wan Chai District (WCHDIST) and Yau Tsim District (YTDIST) by installing the system in the VIRs of Wan Chai Police Station and Tsim Sha Tsui Police Station. Two training sessions were also conducted for crime officers of WCHDIST and YTDIST.

After the pilot scheme, CSTCB will collaborate with the Technical Services Division to extend the implementation of the system to all VIRs in the Force. CSTCB believes that the digital investigation capability of crime officers can be further enhanced to cope with the ever-changing landscape of cyber security and technology crime.
