To better prepare officers for physically demanding operational duties, the Police Tactical Unit Headquarters (PTU HQ) has introduced the use of advanced indoor bike trainers into physical training since January to enhance the training efficiency.

The newly introduced indoor bike trainer is an advanced training tool, which has been widely adopted in the training of world-class athletes and overseas disciplined forces. The bike generates accurate personalised performance data including power output (in watts) and maximum oxygen uptake (VO2Max), which can effectively quantify trainees’ lower-limb strength and cardiopulmonary function. Not only does it allow Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) to collect more scientific and accurate data to gauge trainees’ physical performance at different training stages, but it also enables PTIs to critically review the progress of trainees and adjust their training goals. Meanwhile, the data collected will be used for long-term analysis for enhancement of training design, with a view to maximising the training output and efficacy.

Superintendent (Support) of PTU HQ Tsang Chiu-tong said that in response to the ever-changing environment, PTU HQ will endeavor to embrace new technology to optimise physical training programmes with a view to strengthening trainees’ physical standard to achieve various operational missions and meet emerging challenges.
