Long Range (LoRa) technology is commonly used in Internet of Things systems. LoRa is characterised by its ability for long distance transmission and low power consumption.

At the trial stage, the Innovation and Solution Lab (ISLAB) of the Information Systems Wing has assisted a few formations/units, including the Police Sports and Recreation Club and police stations to install LoRa sensors at the entrances of their office facilities and property stores to enhance security. When the sensors detect any unauthorised access to the premises, the system will notify the responsible officers via email or SMS, so that timely response can be taken. Besides, the ISLAB is going to collaborate with units which have previously suffered from water seepage to install LoRa sensors near their valuable equipment and electronic inventories to monitor the water leakage so as to minimise the loss triggered.

LoRa has a wide range of applications. It can be used in transmitting data for different kinds of sensors. Operational units interested in participating in ISLAB’s testing or officers who have any innovative suggestions on putting LoRa into use may contact Superintendent Ho Yiu-cheung (Tel: 3660-7120) of the ISLAB for feasibility discussion.
