In May, Yuen Long District (YLDIST) and Border District (BORDIST) organised seminars and village visits to raise villagers’ preparedness for tropical cyclones and flooding and enhance their ability to handle natural disasters.


On May 12, YLDIST collaborated with the Home Affairs Department (HAD), the Fire Services Department (FSD), the Civil Aid Service (CAS), the Hong Kong Observatory, the Drainage Services Department, the Civil Engineering and Development Department, the Highways Department, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJCDPRI) and the China Hong Kong Mountaineering and Climbing Union to conduct a seminar at the Yuen Long Town Hall to provide villagers with information on precautionary and contingency measures against natural disasters. The Yuen Long District Fight Crime Committee (YLDFCC) also attended the seminar to disseminate anti-scam and crime prevention information.


In addition, Commander of YLDIST Ho Chun-chung, Deputy Commander of YLDIST Ng Kwok-cheung, police officers, YLDFCC members, Junior Police Call Honorary Presidents, Senior Police Call (SPC) Honorary Presidents and members, as well as officers and volunteers of FSD visited several villages that are highly vulnerable to typhoons and flooding to distribute blessing bags and pamphlets with natural disaster safety information.


On May 13, BORDIST held a seminar with HAD’s North District Office, FSD, CAS, HKJCDPRI and the China Light and Power Company Limited. The seminar shared knowledge of precautionary measures against tropical cyclones and flooding, emergency evacuation, operation of the Emergency Co-ordination Centre of North District, response to power outages and other relevant information. A total of 50 participants attended the seminar, including chairpersons of Rural Committees in Ta Kwu Ling, Sha Tau Kok, Sheung Shui and San Tin, various village heads and village representatives.


On May 14, officers of BORDIST, FSD and CAS, together with village representatives and SPC members of BORDIST, visited 11 villages to distribute kits with leaflets on natural disaster safety information and useful items for dealing with emergencies during inclement weather.
