According to the Police’s statistics, almost half of the cases handled in the report rooms are related to loss of property. In view of this, the Innovation and Solution Lab (ISLAB) of the Information Systems Wing has been setting up Self-Service Kiosks on a trial basis in report rooms for members of the public to report lost property cases by themselves so that they will no longer be required to wait at the counter to report their cases to officers. The Kiosks not only facilitate the public reporting their cases promptly and conveniently, but also reduce the workload of the report room officers, resulting in more effective resource deployment, less overall waiting time at report rooms and higher service quality.


The Kiosks have been put to use since September 2021 and installed in the report rooms of Wan Chai, Mong Kok, Yuen Long, Kwun Tong, Tuen Mun and Kwai Chung Police Stations. Senior Inspector of ISLAB Wong Chun-yin said, “Various new functions, including Cantonese speech-to-text, have been added to the Kiosks since April to facilitate data input and reduce the users’ need to touch the keyboard or writing board. This would lower the risk of virus transmission. Moreover, voice navigations in Cantonese, Putonghua and English are available additionally to guide the users along so that they can complete the report procedure smoothly.” About 60% and 40% of lost property cases are processed by the Kiosks in the report rooms of Kwai Chung and Yuen Long Police Stations respectively. The average processing time of each case is four minutes, which has effectively saved the time of the public and reduced the workload of the frontline officers.


The public are glad to see that the Force improves its service quality by means of modern technology. They consider that the Kiosks can reduce their time for queuing to report their cases, and hope that more service alternatives are available in the future. ISLAB will keep enhancing the functions of the Kiosks and optimising policing work through adoption of modern technology.
