To combat scams, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) launched the upgraded Scameter+ on February 26. Automated functions have been included in the app to help the public identify scam calls and websites. Citizens can also report suspicious calls and websites immediately via the app to achieve All-round CyberDefence.

Detecting scams automatically

The newly added functions, Call Alert and Website Detection, in Scameter+ can automatically compare incoming calls and visited websites against the latest scam database. If a potential scam or cyber security risk is detected, the app will issue a real-time warning alert, reminding users to avoid falling into traps.

Safeguarding privacy

Scameter+ pushes the latest scam database to users’ mobile devices every day for comparison. The process takes place only within their devices while their personal data such as call records and web browsing history will not be saved in the app, nor transferred externally.

New public intelligence platform with AI analysis

Citizens may report suspicious phone numbers or websites to the Force directly through the newly added function, Public Intelligence, in Scameter+ to further enrich the scam database.

Moreover, the reported telephone numbers and websites will be risk-assessed by the AI analysis mechanism on the Public Intelligence platform first. CSTCB officers will then conduct verification before adding the data to the scam database to ensure the accuracy of the scam database.

Anti-scam publicity

CSTCB has once again invited super star Mr Aaron Kwok to feature in the anti-deception promotion video of the All-Round CyberDefence campaign with a view to encouraging the public to download Scameter+ and enhancing their anti-scam awareness. Furthermore, the officers will continue working closely with the Police Community Relations Offices of the Districts, community leaders, members of the Junior Police Call and Senior Police Call, as well as other stakeholders, to promote Scameter+ and other anti-deception tools, including the Scameter, Suspicious Proxy Alert of Faster Payment System and the online platform, CyberDefender.
