To combat taxi issues at Lan Kwai Fong (LKF), such as overcharging and refusing hire, Central District (CDIST), in collaboration with the taxi industry, Lan Kwai Fong Association (LKFA) and the Central and Western District Road Safety Campaign Committee (C&W DRSCC), has launched the three-month LKF Taxi Ambassadors Scheme since April 5.

The scheme includes Taxi Ambassadors arranged by C&W DRSCC, who assist passengers in recording information such as estimated fares, taxi license plate numbers and destinations on the taxi information cards before the passengers board a taxi at the taxi stand on Wellington Street and Stanley Street from midnight to 5am every Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile, the taxi industry is also arranging law-abiding taxi drivers to LKF to ensure adequate supply of taxis during peak hours at night, while the LKFA encourages its members and staff of bars and restaurants to promote the scheme to customers and deploy Promotion Ambassadors to guide passengers to the two designated taxi stands at the initial stage of the scheme. CDIST is responsible for the overall co-ordination and continues to combat illegal taxi activities.

The Taxi Ambassadors assisted over 450 passengers at the first weekend of the scheme and the issue of illegal taxis at LKF significantly decreased. Some tourists also expressed support for the scheme. Deputy District Commander of CDIST Law Kwok-hoi said that the effectiveness of the scheme would be reviewed continuously during the pilot period to determine the feasibility of extending and expanding the scheme in terms of time and location.
