The Force’s “Animal Watchers Programme” (AWP) organised the “Paws & Promise: A Century of Care Carnival” from October 4 to 5 at Hopewell Centre, Wan Chai. Marking the 100th anniversary of the World Animal Day, this event attracted over 2 500 citizens and their beloved pets, aroused public concern for animal welfare and promoted the message of “Protect Animals, Respect Life” together.

The carnival commenced with an appointment and commendation ceremony officiated by the Commissioner Chow Yat-ming on the first day. During the ceremony, the Commissioner presented certificates of appreciation to the community leaders and ambassadors nominated by the six Regions, recognising their ongoing efforts to promote animal protection in the local community. Appointment certificates of AWP Student Mentors were also presented to veterinary student representatives from the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences of City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), recognising and encouraging their continued application of professional knowledge to promote animal care education in schools.

The event also witnessed the succession of two generations of Spokesdogs. The first-generation AWP Spokesdogs Sunny and Zander who had participated in community education work since 2021 officially retired and were awarded with “Commanding Officer’s Commendation” in recognition of their contributions over the years. The Spokesdogs of the new generation Goofy and Happy took up the caring mission in the presence of guests and the public, continuing to spread messages of animal care in the community.

The carnival featured a variety of interactive zones for participants and pets, including Hong Kong’s first human-pet rope challenge, cat and dog health check services provided by the CityUHK, animal care corner exhibitions by primary and secondary schools, pet technology interactive booth, and adoption zone for stray cats and dogs. In the “Human Library” activity held on October 5, four animal rescue, exotic pets and parrot experts were invited to bring in their beloved pets and share touching stories and experiences of living with animals so as to enable the public to gain a new understanding of the emotional bonds and connections between humans and animals in daily lives.

Since its launch in 2021, AWP has been dedicated to pooling together all sectors of society to promote the message of preventing cruelty to animals. This carnival not only served as a meaningful present for the centenary of the World Animal Day, but also symbolised the strong connection between the Force and the public in advocating for animal welfare.

Officers of AWP were invited to participate in the International Asian Veterinary Conference and Exhibition held at the AsiaWorld-Expo from August 12 to 14. Through a publicity booth and thematic presentations, officers promoted and exchanged ideas on preventing animal cruelty with veterinary professionals and corporate representatives across the regions.
