Following the widespread resonance of “Small but Significant Role” eight years ago, the Police College has launched a sequel this month - the “CID Episode”, which aims to inspire officers to join the crime stream, and encourages those currently serving in crime units to continue the spirit of making a significant impact from a small role.
The opening of the short video quoted a remark "It is a matter of regret if one has never been involved in criminal investigation work" made by the Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Yip Wan-lung at the “A Dialogue with 42nd Floor” session. Afterwards, a “Guess Who” scam case is mentioned, in which an elderly victim who was unable to bear the loss of her life savings to the scam chose to end her life. The main character pieced together vague clues, brought the suspect to justice in the end, and recovered the scammed money for the victim.
The short video portrays the busy daily duties of a District Investigation Team (DIT), brings out the fatigue of crime officers discharging their official duties, as well as the sacrifice of missing important family moments.
Criminal investigation work may not create earth-shattering police stories, but a simple and sincere “thank you” from the public is the greatest affirmation for crime officers. It is believed that the team spirit of “standing together, shoulder to shoulder” and the “heartening” feeling when solving a case are also what each crime officer aspire to.
Commissioner Chow Yat-ming shares his experiences and feelings from his early days as a crime officer at the end of the short video, and indicates that he still feels honoured and proud to have served in crime investigation. He emphasises that the Force management will continue to improve the working environment of DIT, and urges more colleagues to join the crime stream.
The short video will also be played during foundation training to enhance trainees’ understanding of crime investigation work, and encourage them to join the crime investigation work.
