On July 25, the Animal Watchers Programme (AWP) held the “Pledging to Protect, Animal Care Express” launching cum “Animal Care Corners” commendation ceremony at K11 Art Mall in Tsim Sha Tsui. Commissioner Chow Yat-ming and the Head of Charities (Education & Youth Cluster) of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Ms Winnie Ying served as the officiating guests and launched the brand-new educational publicity vehicle “Animal Care Express”.
In recent years, the concept of “Pet Inclusivity” has gradually taken root in society and pets have become an indispensable part of many families. However, unfortunate incidents involving animals still occasionally occur. In his speech, the Commissioner mentioned the importance of education and publicity on “Protect Animals, Respect Life”, highlighting the need to cultivate a caring attitude towards animals among citizens and plant the seeds of animal protection deeply in children’s hearts.
The Commissioner also presented commendation certificates to 11 outstanding schools from the six regions in recognition of their efforts in promoting animal care on campus. Some schools have arranged for students to take turns as “Caring Keepers”, carefully recording the health conditions of their pets. Another school has established an “Amazon STEM Centre” housing more than 80 species of amphibians and reptiles, allowing students to learn about the wonders of life up close. Furthermore, some kindergartens have implemented the “Little Keeper” scheme to help children develop respect for life from an early age.
At the event, booths were set up to allow participants to have close contact with small animals and learn about animal care through games.
During the summer holiday, the “Animal Care Express” will tour nine districts across Hong Kong. With a number of interactive mini-games, the vehicle aims to educate participants about animal-related topics and foster a compassionate attitude towards animals.
