Marine Sports Day

MORE than 300 officers
gathered at the Police Sports and Recreation Club to take part in the Marine Sports
Day and to compete in nine land and four water games.
¡@In the past, the event's contestants vied for medals in land games such as ball
competitions, running, tug-of-war and the like. This was the first time the contest
included water games such as dumbo tow with heaving line, swimming with life jacket,
life buoy rescue and underwater treasure hunt - all utilising the commonly used
skills of Marine Police.

¡@Land sports included tennis, table-tennis, squash, basketball, indoor-5-a-side
football, tug-of-war, ladies 60-metre run, 300-metre x 4 relay and a veteran 3.5K run -
in which Marine Regional Commander Tony Ferrige finished in a respectable time.
¡@Marine East Division were overall champions of the day, winning they
medals in eight games.

RECENTLY the Marine
West Division basketbal team played a friendly match against
the team from the navy destroyer USS Blue Bidge of the American Seventh Fleet at
the PSRC.
¡@Although the game was friendly,both teams were psyched up to win.Marine West are
the recent basketball champions of the Marine Police Proficeincy competition,while the
USS Blue Ridge team does nothing but play ball when not attendion to duties on
board the destroyer.

¡@At the end of the first half,the guests wer leading by 38 to 30-a respectable score
for Marine,considering the height of their opponents.
¡@Final score:Vistitors 70,Home 58.
¡@A great BBQ dinner followed the game at ghe MWDIV HQ,with both teams looking for
ward to another match when the USS Blue Ridge visits Hong Kong again a end of the year.

Police Trampoline Club
TRAMPOLINE Club activities
have resumed following the renovation work at ghe POC with sessions being held every
¡@Wednesday between 6pm and 8pm in Squash Court 3,where a brand new international
standard CEETEX trampoline with builtin crash mats has been set up permanently.
That's right permanently-which means the trampolone does not have to be put away
after each training session.
¡@In addition,the club has acquired a CEETEX demountable overhead safety rig and
tumbling belt for rse in training and for learning new routines.
¡@Members wishing to participate are required to wear PT kit and either socks or
gym shoes.Barefooted trampolining is prohibited.

SPORTING NOTES
"DISCOVER MAI PO" CHARITY WALK
¡@Discover Mai Po is a unique weekend outing event unlike any other fund
raising programme in Hong Kong. It provides an opportunity for local people to see Hong Kong's
leading nature reserve while raising money for the WWF - World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong.
The charity walk will be held on Sunday 30 November and all are invited to participate or sponsor those
walking. Last year 106 police officers and their families took part in the walk and raised $37,000.

POLICE TABLE TENNIS CLUB
¡@The Force Table Tennis Club is running technique improvement courses from 5pm to 7 pm on
Mondays and Fridays from 1 September to 17 October at the PSRC. Cost: $50. All regular and

KOWLOON WEST REGIONAL SPORTS DAY
¡@The 1997 Kowloon West Regional Sports Day will be held on 7 November at the
PSRC between 9am and 5pm.
TUEN MUN DISTRICT FISHING CLUB
¡@The newly-created Tuen Mun District Fishing Club is now signing up members.
All officers, civilian staff and their families of the district are welcome to join the
activities of the club. Says ADC, ADM, TM Superintendent Alan To, who is also
the chairman of the club: "The long coastline of Tuen Mun makes it an ideal
fishing area. The fresh air and picturesque scenery all come together to make it
a wonderland for anglers." Anyone interested in joining the club call the DSRO,

POLICE SHOOTING CLUB
¡@With the kind approval of Commandant PTS, live firing practice has been arranged
at PTS indoor range between 1pm and 6pm every Saturday afternoon. While all
members are welcome, it is emphasized that parking facilities are restricted to the
football pitch next to drill shed. Enquiries: 2319-0017 or 2779-2812.
ANNUAL FORCE SHOOTING COMPETITION
¡@Top guns of the Force are welcome to participate in this year's Annual Force Shooting
Competition between 1 September and 31 October.
¡@Organised by the Weapons Training Division, this is a major Force sporting event open
to all serving officers qualified to carry arms. Participants will compete for eight trophies.
Four of them are team trophies, namely the Sir Robert Black Trophy, DCP OPS's Trophy,
Thorpe Trophy and DPT's Trophy.
¡@The four individual trophies are: Commissioner's Cup, DCI's Cup, Lomas Cup and DMS's Cup.
¡@The preliminary rounds of this year's competition begin on 1 September for three days at May
House Indoor Range and Kowloon East Operation Base Range. The semi-finals will take place
at Arsenal House Range on 17 October. The finals will be held at PTU HQ on 31 October.
¡@The competition includes both team and individual events for officers of the Uniform Branch
and crime stream as well as categories for specialist units.
¡@Each district or formation should form up a six-player team and each member of the team can
compete for individual trophies.
¡@Full details of the various events including dates, times and courses of fire as well as entry
forms, can be obtained from the District Staff Relation Officer.
¡@The closing date for entries is 4 August. Late submissions will not be considered. Enquiries

MEDICAL CHECK-UPS
¡@The Helen Lee Siu-foon Institute of Sports Medicine is again offering its services to
Force members and their families. The clinic is in Sha Wan Drive, Sandy Bay. Those
interested in any of the four tests (Osteoporosis Bone Density Test; the General Health
Check; the Comprehensive Health Check; and the Complete Physical Health Test),
