Hong Kong Police "Second to none"
THE Chairman of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, John Strickland, said the Hong Kong Police Force was second to none in Asia and one of the finest police forces in the world.

Speaking at the most recent passing-out parade at the Police Training School, Mr Strickland told officers taking part that they would be expected to set high standards of personal integrity and maintain a reputation that had taken their colleagues and their predecessors years to build.

"Your occupation is one where men and women choose to put their safety at risk on a daily basis for one reason: namely, to protect others,"he noted.


Before reviewing the new batch of officers passing-out, Chairman of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, John Strickland,told them they would be expected to maintain a reputation that had taken their predecessors years to build

"In the years to come you will need all the training, sharpness of response and good judgement you have learned at the Police Training School. Your will also need stamina and the ability to be calm in moments of crisis," he said.

Mr Strickland told officers that they could be proud of their chosen career, proud of serving the community and proud of making the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region a safe place to live.

A total of 24 probationary inspectors and 190 recruit constables graduated on the day ¡Ð Saturday, September 12.



Anti-burglary campaign
AS part of the Force's anti-burglary crusade, September saw police in Central, Eastern, Western, Wan Chai and Marine Port Districts organise publicity campaigns aimed at raising public awareness of anti-burglary measures at home and at work.

District Commander (Central) Lee Wai-lam presented a commendation certificate to a security guard who helped police apprehend two burglars. Mr Lee was then joined by officials from the Central and Western District Office, the Central and Western Provisional District Board, the District Fight Crime Committee and various Area Committees as well as Junior Police Call honorary presidents in distributing burglary prevention leaflets.

For its part, Eastern's District Commander Yeung Ying-wai gave a September briefing on the "Building Anti-Burglary System Improvement Scheme", then visited buildings which had their anti-burglary systems updated and improved. Hong Kong Island Regional Commander Leung Chi-bun, and the chairman of the Eastern DFCC, Chan Bing-woon also attended the briefing.

In Western, Acting District Commander Ma Wai-luk and the chairman of the Southern DFCC, Ko Tam-kan, presented letters of appreciation and plaques to two security guards who aided police in the arrest of burglars. After the ceremony they distributed leaflets on preventing burglary and enhancing security at nearby buildings.

Wan Chai District Commander Tsang Wai-hung presented commendation letters to seven outstanding security guards selected by Wan Chai plainclothes officers who conducted a six-month exercise to test the vigilance and professionalism of building security personnel in over 3,000 unannounced visits. Mr Tsang was then joined by members of the Wan Chai Provisional District Board, Wan Chai DFCC and Junior Police Call in distributing leaflets on building security and booklets on the rights of security personnel to owners' corporations and mutual aid committees.

Marine Port District Commander Au Hok-lam, Deputy District Commander Wong Sui-fat, Islands DFCC members Wong King-chuen and Yu Lai-fan, and 27 Junior Police Call members distributed almost 3,000 anti-crime leaflets on Lamma Island as part of the District's crime prevention campaign.
