Police Golfing Society
The Huizhou Golf Camp

THE popularity of golf is increasing among highly-stressed city dwellers ? as is the membership of the Police Golfing Society whose players recently got away from the concrete jungle that is the HKSAR for two days and one night to enjoy several rounds at the 18-hole golf course in Huizhou.

The group of 58 golfers all agreed that it was a wonderful trip.

Eighteen holes of golf in Huizhou ¡Ð a recommended perfect antidote for stressed out members of the Force

"Golf is a sport which is easy to learn but difficult to master," said Police Golfing Society member Chief Inspector Rebecca Lam. "To maintain a proper posture, golfers must be in a calm state of mind and concentrate on their swing, all the while paying close attention to the uneven features of the fairways, the roughs and the sand traps. You also have to judge the distance between the tee and the 18 holes ¡Ð all of which have their own characteristics. These aspects are what attract players to the game.

"My golf partner told me that golf is her 'second life' because playing on weekends enables her to unwind from the stresses of her daily work schedule. And on this particular trip one of the beginners insisted on continuing to play in the heavy rain in order to get a feel for playing in different weather conditions. Such behaviour is perhaps unimaginable to those who have never played the game, but dedicated players understand it only too well."?

Apart from having fun in a tranquil and unpolluted environment, golfers also enjoy the social aspects of the sport which usually culminate in the bar or restaurant of the clubhouse (or the "19th hole") after the game where participants are eager to share the day's experience and to analyse the course and their game.

"Even people who are normally reserved tend to open up and indulge in the lively camaraderie. It's the golf culture," concludes CIP Lam, who is already making plans for her next golfing getaway.
