Police Motoring Club raises over
$200,000 for mainland flood relief

IN response to Commissioner of Police Hui's Force-wide appeal to raise funds for victims of the flooding in the mainland this summer, the Police Motoring Club held a charitable auto treasure hunt (basically motor orienteering), to raise money in support of the Hong Kogn Police Force China Flood Disaster Relief Fund.

The idea came out of a Police Motoring Club August meeting and ,thanks to the support of Police Sports CouncilChairmam Lioneel Lam,an organising committee was formed and various working groups were set up to handle such problems as road event permit application, route plotting, poster design, certificates, T-shirt design, publicity and promotion.

The bulk of the work was undertaken by volunteer members as a cost-cutting exercise to enable more money to be given to the Relief Fund .

Then, on the beautiful and sunny Sunday morning of 20 Septenber (after the Chief Marshal of the event, Dr Mong Hoi-Keung, Consultant Forensic Pathologist and Vice President of the Police Motoring Club, briefed drivers on the rules and regulations of the event ) some 160 private cars and motorcycles driven by PMC members with their families set off from the Police Tactical Unit Headquarters in Fanling to various destinations in Kowloon and throughout the New Territories including the new Airport at Chap Lap Kok.

PTS Commandant Charles Wong and former Miss Hong Kong Mary Cheung officiated at the starting ceremony.

Five hours and some 150 kilometres later, vehicles began to return to the finish point at the Hong Kong International Trade & Exhibition Centre in Kowloon Bay. Combining charity with fun, the smiling motorists provided ample proof of the event's worthwhile nature. (Not to mention its great buffet dinner enjoyed by all)

RC KE John Yuen, and renowned Hong Kong racecar driver Henry Lee, presented prizes to champion of the Honour Class Lai Hung-cheong, and first and second runners-up Dora Chan and Lau Sik-min.

Kwong Chi-Keung won in the open Class, with Mak Kwok -yau first, and Kwok Yu-chiu second runners-up.

Hui Ngai-sang took the Motorcycle Championship .

After deducting operational costs for the event, the Club raised $200, 200 for the Relief Fund which was donated to PHQ through the Police Sports Council last month.

"I have to thank the strong support of our members and friends who joined me in offering a helping hand to those whose homes have been ruined and who are living a miserable life in the flooded areas," said Superintendent Chan Chun-hing, Chairman of the Police Motoring Club.

He attributed the success of the event to the support of the Police Sports Council and the dedication of each and every member of the organising committee and the marshals.

"In just three weeks they worked tirelessly to solve all the problems associated with a great project that could easily have been taken months to prepare."
