"Back to the Floor"

DEAR SIR,

BBC television recently broadcast a series entitled "Back to the Floor" in which the leaders of six organisations each spent a day on their respective "shop floors". One of these was a Chief Constable who spent a shift with an emergency unit.

This management principle, whereby senior managers spend a full day with junior staff, has gained ground and could be an effective way of identifying any real problems that exist on a day-to-day basis.

May I suggest this initiative be considered by the Force?

Road safety seminars

The following letter was sent to CP Hui . . .

DEAR SIR,

I am writing in thanks for your valuable assistance and the contribution of your officers in conducting five tailor-made road safety seminars for our drivers and riders in December 1998.

Special thanks to Road Safety Officer Kathleen Wong, Traffic, Hong Kong Island, Assistant Road Safety Officer Danny Wong, WSgt Tang Cheng Pik-chi, Sgt Leung Wai-hung, and SPC Cheung Man-hing.

Our employees have greatly benefited from these interesting and informative seminars which have enhanced their road safety awareness and knowledge of safe driving techniques, proper driving attitudes and traffic regulations.

I sincerely hope that your Road Safety Team will continue to assist us in organising similar events in future.

Burglars foiled

DEAR SIR,

Our client is a well known trader who operates a number of shops in various locations in Hong Kong selling traditional Chinese sweet soups and desserts.

On 19 December 98, at 3am an attempted burglary was detected by Hong Kong Police officers at our client's Wanchai shop and the suspect was apprehended on the spot.

Two days later, at the Mongkok shop, another incident of attempted burglary was also detected by police at about 12:30am. Again, the suspect was apprehended at the shop.

Our client is deeply grateful for the efforts of members of the Wanchai Police Station and the Mongkok Police Station with respect to the aforesaid incidents, and wishes to express sincere appreciation and gratitude for the vigilance of the Force, and its constant and highly successful efforts in crime prevention.

Robbery victim rescued by police

Tse Fung-lan presenting a banner of thanks
to Tseung Kwan O officers

DEAR SIR,

After alighting from a bus in Sai Kung, while on my way home on the evening of 22 August 98, I was grabbed by two men who attempted to rob me at knife point.

I was very frightened and screamed, at which time several plainclothes police officers appeared and chased the robbers into the dark surrounding bushes where they fled.

One of the plainclothes officers remained to comfort me from the ordeal and allowed me the use of a mobile phone to call my family.

Later I learned that the area had been the sight of several robberies and as a result officers from a Tseung Kwan O Police Station Task Force had been lying in ambush there.

In this incident I was helpless and in a state of panic. I experienced the competency of the Hong Kong Police.

I appreciate DC Kwun Tong, Tam Kwok-wing's leadership and handling of the situation. In addition, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to SSgt Li Mau-chuen, PCs Lui Wai-kwong, Luk Chi-hung, Yeung Man-fai, Fu Kin-choi and So Chi-kong.

Thank you very much.
Tse Fung-lan
