Frankly talk about Organ Donation

IN early March, a woman police officer and colleague died of a serious lung disease. Prior to her death, her family members appealed to the public for a lung donation ¡Ð but to no avail. In fact, she may have survived if more people were willing to donate their organs after death.

Organ donation may be a taboo in traditional Chinese culture but that can be changed with a sensible, open mind ¡Ð and a better understanding of organ donation.

Which human organs are suitable for donation?

Many different human organs such as skin, skeletal parts, the pancreas, liver, heart, lungs, bone marrow and corneas are suitable for donation.

Who can donate organs?

Anyone can donate his/her organs for transplantation after death.

Will doctors try their best to save the lives of critically ill potential organ donors?

Absolutely. Doctors must try their best to save he life of every patient. Transplantation will be carried out only when doctors are absolutely certain that the person is beyond recovery and that death has been pronounced in accordance with established clinical criteria.

Will the body of an organ donor look damaged after the organ transplantation?

No. The operation will be done by a specialist team and the body is treated with respect and reverence.

How does one go about expressing his or her wish to donate their organs after death?

Simply fill in an Organ Donation Card, keep it, and inform your family.

Where can you get an Organ Donation Card?

It is available in the Central Health Education Unit, general out patient clinics, maternal and child health centres of the Department of Health. Organ Donation Cards are also available at indoor games halls, swimming pools, libraries and civic centres of the Urban Council and Regional Council. A card can also be obtained at District Offices, Licensing Offices of the Transport Department, blood donation centres of the Hong Kong Red Cross and institutions under the Hospital Authority.

By making a decision to become an organ donor, you will be helping to save the lives of others after your death. It is really a noble act. So please think about it.
