Modern new Police post for Peng Chau

The new-look Peng Chau Post was opened last month offering staff more space and resources and residents better services.

RC MAR Foo Tsun-kong and DC MP Kong Shing-shun open the post
Regional Commander of Marine Foo Tsun-kong officiated at the opening ceremony and sampled the post's new features which included a well-facilitated report room, a separate interview room, an armoury and a new conference room.

"The new post provides a spacious working environment for Force members which will improve service quality with the increased resources," Mr Foo said.

Station Sergeant of the post Leung Tung-choi said the office was now connected to the Police Formation Information Communal System which greatly improved communication with other stations.

The new post occupies an area of over 2,000 square feet and is an extension of the old Peng Chau Post which has been in service since 1965. The old post will be retained as the changing room and resting place for officers.

The provision of the new post was necessary to improve service quality and the working conditions of officers due to the island's population growth and the wear and tear of the old facilities.

Peng Chau's population numbers about 5,000 yet it retains a relatively low crime rate - the most common problems being burglary, disputes and assault.

Officer in Charge of the post Inspector Yau Kwok-man said it was quite different from other police stations because of its island-village location, making the relationship between officers and the community totally different from that in the urban area. He said life on Peng Chau was quiet and simple.

"Our patrol area includes all business and residential areas, therefore we know almost every resident here," Mr Yau said.

The post is also unique in other ways, such as with some of its equipment like the brass gong used to alert officers in an emergency.
