High ratings for Police Magazine

Police Magazine has been rated the eighth most popular television show in the first-quarter 1999 TV Programme Appreciation Index Survey.

The show, produced jointly by the TV & Films Liaison Section of the Police Public Relations Branch and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), competed against top programmes from the commercial stations for the result which covers the first quarter of the year.

The Public Opinion Programme of the Social Sciences Research Centre at the University of Hong Kong was commissioned by RTHK, TVB and ATV to regularly conduct the survey from 1998 to gauge audience opinion on the quality of locally produced programmes.

To ensure fairness and credibility of the research, an advisory panel comprising representatives of the TV stations and the advertising industry, along with academics, was set up to format the questionnaire, set the methodology of conducting the survey and decide the TV programmes to be covered.

The research looked at 97 programmes on news, current affairs and info-tainment produced by TVB Jade, ATV Home as well Cable TV, and frequently broadcast from January 1 to March 31 this year.

Researchers conducted telephone interviews through random sampling with a total of 3,124 Cantonese-speaking local residents aged nine and above from April 19 to April 28. The average response rate was 53.5 per cent.

The result reflected the top quality of the Force's house programme.
