Police turn summer teachers for secondary students

Castle Peak Division officers volunteered to supervise a special camp for 100 local secondary students last week at Queen's Hill Camp.

Dubbed the "100 Club", the three-day camp ran from July 5 to 7 and was open to students from the 10 secondary schools within the Division's jurisdiction. Officers and other volunteers participated in the camp designed to help youngsters nominated by the schools.

Assistant Divisional Commander (Administration) of Castle Peak Yeung Ching-see said: "The officers supervised the youngsters through a fun programme of sports and team exercises, and gave guidance through discipline training and counselling."

And the happy campers received an extra treat when pop idol Ekin Cheng Yee-kin appeared at the camp's closing ceremony, offering some encouraging words and playing games with the students.

"The camp was aimed at instilling the concept of self discipline and team work among the youths, as well as improving ties between Castle Peak police and the local schools," Mr Yeung said. The move follows the Division's Secondary School Liaison Officer Scheme. Launched in 1997, one officer from the Division was allocated to each school within its jurisdiction as a liaison officer. The move proved a success and the 100 Club was proposed earlier this year.
