Toddler bounces back to health
- Mum says thanks for life-saving help

Hale and hearty: Toddler Sik Chun-pong and his mother ChanYing-chi say thanks to WPC Lau Ming-shan and SGT Chan Kam-shing for helping save his life

From the way he was laughing and scampering around recently, you would never have thought little Sik Chun-pong was seriously ill only a week before. The 14-month-old was a picture of health on November 15 when he met the two officers who kept his life out of danger just eight-days earlier, after he had a seizure in his mother's arms on a Causeway Bay street.

Sergeant Chan Kam-shing and Woman Police Constable Lau Ming-shan of Emergency Unit Hong Kong Island Platoon 1 visited Chun-pong and his mum Chan Ying-chi in North Point and played with the happy youngster - a far cry from their original anxious meeting.

The officers spotted a frantic Ms Chan running with her toddler and crying for help at the junction of Hennessy Road and Percival Street while on patrol on November 7.

They rushed over to assist but the mother was too distraught to speak. Chun-pong had only just been seen that morning by a doctor for a fever and was on the way home with his mum when he suddenly fell seriously sick. "The baby was pale and appeared to be in poor condition. We rushed him to a safe place by the roadside and checked over his body for possible injuries, checked his mouth to ensure nothing was choking him, checked his pulse and called an ambulance. But he was short of breath and didn't respond well," SGT Chan said.

Two St John Ambulance Brigade officers who happened to pass by also offered assistance. Chun-pong was rushed to hospital as Ms Chan was comforted by the officers. He soon recovered.

"The baby was holding one of my fingers during the entire incident. He was weak at first but then his little hand started to hold my finger tightly, I knew then he would be all right and it made me feel relieved," WPC Lau said.

The two officers said it was the first time they had helped save such a young life and were proud of their efforts. A delighted Ms Chan was full of praise for their work and thanked them during their visit.
