Peak performance: Members of the Police team warm up before the big event

The Police team conquered the Matilda Charities Sedan Chair Race for the sixth-year running on October 31.

The burly team of 10 runners and a petite sedan jockey, stormed around the 3.2-kilometre course on The Peak in 13 minutes 39 seconds to take the event's 25th crown.

Again, the team squared-off against fierce competitors the HSBC team to capture the win, ensuring the much-coveted Matilda Shield remained at its worthy home in the Police Tactical Unit Headquarters.

Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa presented the shield to the sweat-soaked team.

It was made up of skipper Senior Inspector Andy Naylor, Chief Inspector Ian Strange, SIPs Simon Southgate and Paul Jackson.

Acting Sergeants Leung Chi-keung, Li Sze-ki, Cheung Cheuk-wah and Lo Kwok-wai were also along for the ride.

They were also joined by Inspector Nick Crouch, Sergeant Lau Sun-shing and, of course, the ever-brave sedan passenger Chan Shui-yee. After the race, SIP Jackson told OffBeat the fund-raising spirit of the charity event was one of its most important aspects.

"The race was not just an exciting sporting occasion but also one of the most important fund-raising events of the year.

"We in the team are endeavouring to raise as much money as possible for the worthy causes the Matilda Charity Fund supports," he said. "So, a big 'thank you' from the Police team to all those members of the Force and others who turned up and supported us at the event."

The fund raising continues until the end of November, so please show your support.

You can make cheques or postal orders payable to The Matilda Hospital Charities Fund and send them c/o Paul Jackson, PTU HQ (SDU), who will be happy to pass them on.
