New PSYNET series: Sensible Drinking

Following the well-received Stress Management Series the Psychological Services Group (PSG) has prepared a new PSYNET series on sensible drinking which we hope can enhance your understanding and awareness of alcohol.

Alcohol Use and Police Work
Many have drinking experiences, or even drinking habits. Quite a number of police officers drink off-duty. Drinking is often regarded as part of the police culture and for some, it is treated as a stress reduction means.

Influences of Police Culture
Research suggests police culture may be conducive to the high incidence and prevalence of alcohol use (Babin, 1980; Kroes, 1985; Lamphier, 1983; Violanti et al, 1985).

The heroic image of police with the male-oriented tradition, make drinking a symbol of 'masculinity'.

As police forces emphasise the importance of teamwork, drinking with other officers is a means to get better acquainted and enhance group cohesiveness.

Occupational Stress and Demands of Police Work
Police work is very stressful. Due to the secrecy in the job, and avoiding concern among family and friends, some officers have a weak social support network outside the Force. They may also be reluctant to share worries and difficulties with colleagues.

They have no outlet for their feelings.

Compounded with the time constraints induced by shift work, many officers have less chance to participate in social activities and in sports.

As stress builds up, they use alcohol to anaesthetise themselves. However, they should know drinking will not end their problems.

Quite the contrary, it will affect their ability to solve problems and may have adverse effects on their mind and body. As a result, stress levels will be increased.

Many heavy drinkers may be unaware they are developing a dependence or becoming an alcoholic.

As a result, they become the slaves to alcohol and suffer detrimental effects to their health.

Next issue, we'll look at the impact of alcohol on our mental and physical health.
