NTN drives road safety home

Out of sight: Visitors test their vision at the NTN road safety day

Traffic New Territories North closed its 1999-2000 Road Safety Campaign with a ceremony on April 9 at Shui Bin Tsuen football pitch, Yuen Long, attracting about 1,000 visitors.

The day included a host of attractions such as games stalls and displays looking at poor driving traits like bad lane discipline, speeding, tailgating and failure to give way.

Traffic Headquarters' device to test drivers' vision enthralled many participants and surprised several who didn't realise their sight was below safe standards. All participants soon agreed on the significance of good vision for driving.

The bicycle balance test from the Hong Kong Driving School was also popular and showed many had to improve their cycling skills. The day's officiating guests included Traffic NTN Senior Superintendent Wong Sik-pang, NTN Road Safety Campaign Committee and Road Safety Patrol members, along with community leaders.

With the rapid development of the northern New Territories, it was important the public paid good heed to road safety, particularly cyclists. And Traffic NTN's efforts have seen top improvements with many promotion activities targeting different groups boosting the Region's road safety.

One of the more successful moves was the formation of a bicycle patrol team in December to promote safety among cyclists riding the track along Tolo Harbour, and at Tai Mei Tuk Reservoir. The work saw bicycle accidents fall 44 per cent between January and March to 25, from 45 in the same period last year. The team will continue patrols.
