Putonghua showdown

Mandarin masters: The five Putonghua pros with their awards

The Force's first Putonghua Competition proved a real hit with 13 officers taking part at the Police Training School Officers' Mess on April 27.

Co-organised by the Steering Committee on Promoting Chinese in the Force and the Police Chinese Culture Club, competitors read out tongue-twisters and give impromptu talks.

They were divided into native and non-native speaker categories with the judging panel made up of two nationally-accredited Putonghua examiners and the Chief Chinese Languages Officer from the Official Languages Agency.

The top three non-native speaker winners were Police Constable Yim Ming of Cheung Sha Wan Division, Senior Inspector Ko Shun-chi of Security Wing and Chief Inspector Chan Man-mo of the Complaints and Internal Investigations Branch.

Native speaker prizes went to PC Mo Kit of the Commercial Crime Bureau and Inspector James Yu Kong of Sha Tin Division, born in Beijing and Fujian respectively.

Officiating at the event were Steering Group on Promoting Chinese in the Force chairman and Director of Personnel and Training Leung Fung-shun, Working Group on Promoting Chinese in the Force chairman and Chief Superintendent (Service Quality) Gordon Yeung Ying-wai, and Police Chinese Culture Club chairman and Establishment and Civilian Staff Relations Division Chief Executive Officer Eric Choi.

The winners will represent the Force in the Civil Service Putonghua competition next month.

The Force has been promoting Putonghua with regular tailor-made training classes since 1998. Teaching materials were produced jointly by the Training Development Bureau with the help of the Civil Service Training and Development Institute.

Some 4,700 officers have completed elementary courses and about 50 officers are now enrolled in the development course.
